Trading AI, with a research-first mindset
Use Hugging Face LLMs and other models to assist a reviewable research process—not to turn generated confidence into trading authority.
Make the model's job reviewable
Give the model a bounded task: summarize a supplied document, identify supporting passages, explain a code fragment, or suggest questions for further investigation. Preserve the evidence needed to check the result independently.
A convincing explanation is not evidence of an investable edge. Keep generated suggestions in a proposal state until the relevant data, assumptions, calculations, and permissions have been reviewed. HFAPI.com does not recommend trades, rank investments, or forecast returns.
Research boundary
Appropriate assistance
Organize approved material, extract candidate fields, draft experiment notes, and help inspect a test failure. Require source references and an explicit missing-information state when the evidence does not support an answer.
Authority that remains outside the model
Changing authoritative datasets, approving an experiment result, releasing code, and controlling real funds require separate application rules and review. Formatting an answer as JSON does not grant authorization to execute it.
For our reference workflow, model calls remain outside the time-critical order path. See HFT architecture for the separate responsibilities of data freshness, order state, and reconciliation.
A five-stage research workflow
- Define the question. Specify the hypothesis, decision time, baseline, and outcome measure before inspecting the result.
- Preserve point-in-time evidence. Record when each input would actually have been available. Distinguish later revisions from information known at the simulated decision.
- Check the implementation. Review generated code in an isolated environment. Test units, timestamp handling, empty inputs, and leakage boundaries.
- Challenge the result. Compare with simple baselines and less favorable execution assumptions. Keep failed experiments in the record.
- Document limitations. Write a research card covering the data, model role, test conditions, results, review, and unresolved uncertainty.
This sequence is a proposed research method. It is not a claim that any particular strategy is profitable or that a completed checklist authorizes deployment.
Avoid the polished-backtest trap
A result can look persuasive while relying on information unavailable at the decision time, unrealistic fills, omitted costs, or extensive unrecorded experimentation. Keep exploratory work separate from final evaluation and preserve the history of changes.
Use the model to help find possible weaknesses, but verify its reasoning and calculations. Do not ask it to rewrite an explanation until a weak result sounds strong. The research process should make it possible to reject an attractive idea.
Separate testing from deployment approval
The FINRA algorithmic trading guidance discusses development, testing, and supervisory practices for firms within its scope. It is not a general certification of the workflow described here. Applicable obligations require professional review.
Any move toward a real execution environment needs separate operating controls, monitoring, authorization, and rollback planning. Simulated outcomes and paper workflows can help test behavior, but they do not guarantee live performance or eliminate risk of loss.
